Challenges

Visitors struggled to identify entrances and understand the layout

Market lacked a distinctive identity within the wider town centre

Inconsistent signage and unclear communication routes

Need to support increased footfall following redevelopment

Requirement to create clear links between the market, retail zones and civic spaces

Poor visibility leading to reduced visitor confidence
Our Approach
We created a behaviour-led wayfinding strategy focused on clarity, simplicity and strong visual identity. A bold “green trim” design language was introduced to differentiate the market while linking it naturally to the wider town centre. External routes were reorganised to guide visitors confidently from main streets and transport points, while internal signage was carefully positioned to support intuitive movement through stalls, food areas and communal spaces.

Results
The new strategy strengthened the market’s presence within the town centre and improved visibility from key pedestrian routes. Visitors reported easier navigation, stallholders benefited from increased engagement, and the cohesive design helped modernise the overall market experience. The project played an important role in supporting Blackburn’s wider regeneration goals.
