Challenges:
Navigating Complexity in a High-Pressure Environment

Multiple Operators, Mixed Messages

Unclear Onward Travel Routes

Lack of Integration with Terminal Wayfinding

High Stress, Limited Time

Demanding Physical Environment

Balancing Brand and Clarity
Our Approach
We conducted a full analysis of passenger movement, focusing on how people interpreted information when transferring between terminals, buses, coaches and other onward transport. We created a clear and consistent “family of signs” that aligned with Heathrow’s brand but offered improved visibility and clarity within the bus station.

Our strategy ensured:
- A smooth flow from the bus station into airport terminals
- Consistent design language across all touchpoints
- Legible, intuitive onward travel information
- A signage system capable of supporting future airport expansion
- Compliance with accessibility standards without compromising aesthetics
By harmonising the bus station’s identity with the wider airport wayfinding, we improved logic, confidence and continuity across the entire passenger journey.

Results
The updated system improved travel decisions, reduced passenger confusion and helped ease congestion during busy periods. Heathrow Airport noted a decline in wayfinding-related complaints and an increase in passengers using bus and coach services.
Retail visibility improved naturally as movement patterns accelerated, and essential maintenance costs were reduced due to a more efficient signage footprint.
The final system now forms a core part of Heathrow’s broader transport network strategy.
More Transport Wayfinding
Every project we deliver is rooted in how people actually think, move, and make decisions. The results speak for themselves! Clearer journeys, fewer questions, reduced stress, and environments that simply work better.
