Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow is a busy district general hospital serving more than 258,000 people. With ongoing development work and new road layouts around the site, visitors were frequently missing key turnings and arriving late or stressed. The Trust commissioned us to create a clear, cohesive wayfinding strategy that would support patient flow, reduce misdirection and align with future expansion plans.

Different users moved through the site in very different ways, so the strategy had to support each route without confusion.

Parts of the current signage could not be replaced, so the new system had to work around those restrictions.

Our Approach

We conducted a full analysis of arrival routes, key entrances and internal circulation patterns. Our strategy focused first on improving the external journey ensuring drivers could easily identify the correct turn and follow a clear route into the hospital. Internally, we unified the communication system across departments, reducing noise and establishing a consistent hierarchy of information. The signage design was future-proofed to adapt easily as the site’s redevelopment progressed.

Results

The hospital saw immediate improvements in visitor flow, with fewer missed turnings and a clearer understanding of primary entrances. The new internal navigation system reduced confusion and improved staff and patient confidence. The cohesive design strengthened the hospital’s visual identity and created a consistent, reliable system ready to grow with the estate’s long-term plans. We continue to support the hospital with ongoing strategic advice as new phases of development are completed.
