Challenges:

Large site with inconsistent and outdated signage

Multiple “homemade” signs causing visual noise and confusion

Complex car park layout leading to unsafe last-minute decisions

Poor alignment between appointment letters and on-site information

No clear hierarchy or landmark-based navigation for first-time visitors
Our Approach
We carried out a full site analysis, mapping patient, visitor and staff journeys from arrival to destination. Our team developed a clear hierarchy of information, removed unnecessary signage, and created a system that could be understood immediately — even under stress. We aligned all communications, including appointment letters, with on-site messaging and restructured the car park experience to support safer, more intuitive movement.

Results
The new strategy delivered a cleaner, calmer navigation experience across the site. Patients found it easier to locate clinics, staff reported fewer interruptions for directions, and misdirection around the car park significantly decreased. The cohesive, NHS-aligned signage family strengthened the hospital’s brand image and helped RJAH present an environment worthy of its clinical reputation.
