Challenges:

No consistent approach to wayfinding across the estate

Excessive “visual noise” from departmental signs added independently over time

Conflicting information causing confusion and wasted time

Patients arriving with inaccurate expectations due to mismatched correspondence

Site redevelopment meant the strategy needed to cope with years of phased change

Closed departmental structures and siloed decision-making
Our Approach
We began with a full behavioural and environmental analysis, identifying where confusion occurred and why. The strategy focused on simplifying communication, establishing a clear hierarchy, and removing unnecessary signage. We designed an entrance-based system that directed users to one of several clearly identified building entrances before guiding them internally to wards and departments. This allowed for clarity without overwhelming users. The system was designed to be flexible, adjusting easily as new buildings, routes or services were introduced during redevelopment.
Results
The new strategy dramatically reduced missed appointments, late arrivals and patient confusion. Staff reported fewer wayfinding complaints and less time spent giving directions. Navigation became more intuitive, voluntary therapy groups saw improved attendance, and the estate presented a more consistent, professional image. The flexible framework continues to support the Trust’s long-term redevelopment with minimal disruption.
More Hospital Wayfinding
Every project we deliver is rooted in how people actually think, move, and make decisions. The results speak for themselves! Clearer journeys, fewer questions, reduced stress, and environments that simply work better.
